Incorporating ideas founded on the textile, steel and coal production at the time which all played an instrumental part in the pottery's history. The ER pottery is sited and still works from the former woollen mill, with the production of textiles represented in this sculptural piece. The organic form shows the free flowing movement of fabric with a central seam running down the middle. This handthrown and manipulated vessel has a dark salt glaze enhanced by a special slip produced in house and has been finished in our coal fired Beehive kiln with a borax glazed base inside. This large pot features a shapely body and 6 raised bands on its upper body and a prominent rim. Fired high in the kiln which has resulted in stunning patterning and shine to the salt glazed finish. Deep ridges have been carved using specialist tools and measured by eye to replicate the coloumns that flag the entrance of Seaton Delaval Hall. Decorative rope swirl handles have been added to each side of the cylinder and finished with a circle sprig. Natural earthy colours from an ER handmade glaze sweep the outside of this piece on a matt body. Inside is smooth with a transparent glaze that highlights the natural body of the clay.
