Large salt glazed pillar with a fine ribbed body and & imprint, a stamp used by Karl the potter which you will find on many of his one of a kind pieces. Areas have been highlighted with a white porcelain slip offering a contrast of light and shade to the salt glaze which is heightened by the glow of the candle light. The turned top gives ample room for a large pillar candle or a number of smaller candles to create a warming ambience in the home with a lipped base to collect any runaway wax. This handmade piece is heavy giving great stability. Works as a stand alone piece or grouped together with our other candle pillars in various hights for a more dramatic effect. To celebrate 145 years of Errington Reay pottery the creatives at the wheel and heart of ER have created a number of limited edition planters for you to enjoy and treasure. Each planter shape has been chosen for its practicalities in planting. Combining classical styles that have been made throughout our long history, united with forward thinking and fresh design elements that set these special pots apart from our regular range and celebrate our heritage and love for pottery. These pots are placed high in the kiln during the firing process to capture the very best colouring and variations created in our Beehive kiln. Fired to high temperatures and salt glazed using traditional methods which have stood the the test of time and produce a frost proof pot. It wouldn't be a birthday celebration, without including one of our most beloved shapes which also nods towards the beginnings of ER's pottery journey. Updated for 2023 by using a mix of white and high temperature firing clay to create a new creamy salt glazed base and decorated with a slip coloured, hand etched, textured body. A collection of pieces made by Karl that take inspiration from the beginnings of Errington Reay pottery in 1878 and the Victorian industrial era. Incorporating ideas founded on the textile, steel and coal production at the time which all played an instrumental part in the pottery's history.
The ER pottery is sited and still works from the former woollen mill, with the production of textiles represented in this sculptural piece. The organic form shows the free flowing movement of fabric with a central seam running down the middle. The heavy masculine details of rivets, ripped and folded edges incorporate the heavy steel banding and bolts that hold our kiln in place. This handthrown and manipulated vessel has intense dark salt glazed patterning enhanced by a special slip produced in house and has been finished in our coal fired Beehive kiln with a borax glazed base inside.
